This Memorial Day Weekend will mark the 30th anniversary of Vermont Spring Open Studio Weekend!
I remember when I first moved to Vermont and would travel around visiting artist's studios and homes. I would fantasize about what my studio might look like someday. That someday is here! Please stop by Upstairs Studio this Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday (28) and Sunday (29) from 10-5. We are located in beautiful downtown Montpelier at 24 Main Street.

If you choose the Waterbury to Montpelier Loop, you could visit 9 different studios. From pottery to bookbinding and contemporary works in watercolor, oil, acrylic and collage. If you skip the interstate and head down route 2 you can visit Red Hen Bakery and maybe dip your toes in the river! Don't have time for the whole loop? Come to Montpelier where you can visit 5 studios all within walking distance, located near all the downtown shops and restaurants.

With over one hundred studios to choose from, why visit Upstairs Studio? The Upstairs Studio is a magical space, with two full time artists working in different mediums and subject matter. Sam Colt creates gorgeously sophisticated cityscapes with an Italian plaster called grassello that feels like marble to the touch. She will share her process of applying layers of different colors, then carving and scratching back into those layers to reveal what's hidden beneath. Her work is both feminine and masculine, so full of mystery, you can easily lose yourself in it. I will be at the end of a twelve-week intensive art course and my brain is bursting with information! I have about 18 12"x12" panels of new work that are all about exploration and play. I will be sharing my process of how I start a painting, where my inspiration comes from and where that takes me.
